We will adopt a qualitative approach to systematically map out the prevailing business models adopted by digital game companies through case studies and facilitated workshops, and explore the main barriers and facilitators for their sustainable and scalable development. This case study research will focus on games and companies that (to date) have focussed on recreation. Our principal research questions are:

  • What business models have been deployed by companies at different stages of the value chain and in different market segments?
  • What are the main barriers and facilitators for the sustainable and scalable development of (individual) digital games businesses?
  • How can we develop new business models to ensure the continued rapid growth of the UK digital games industry?
